Living among the dead

Those who follow Jesus are living among the dead.

Follow me now, and allow the dead to bury their own dead”. (Matthew 8:22 NASB). The Living Bible reads, “Follow me and let those who are spiritually dead care for their own dead.” (Emphasis mine)

What a strange thing to say to someone following you but that is exactly what Jesus said to a disciple who wanted to go and bury his father.

What does that mean? Let the dead bury their own dead? Here are a few more verses from the Bible regarding this instruction from Jesus –

John 5:24 “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me, has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life”. (Emphasis mine)

Vs. 25 “I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.” (Emphasis mine).

Dead people in a decaying and dying planet

Jesus said, in effect, that if one does not believe God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent, a person is dead. Jesus speaks of the spirit of a person because it is the spirit that will receive eternal life or eternal damnation. That means that His followers are living among the dead on a planet that is decaying and dying and groaning. There is no life in what the spiritually dead are doing even though they consider all their efforts of importance.

Their religions worship humanity and false gods of their own choosing with rules and regulations. These religions do not bring eternal life but sow death and darkness. There is no lasting value in anything that they do. The spiritually dead are without hope in a dark world.

Whether –

  • you are a multi-billionaire, a Nobel Peace price winning scientist, writer, artist or political leader;
  • a dictator controlling a country treating fellow citizens with cruelty and disdain while enriching yourself, your family and cronies;
  • you are an influencer of world leaders, social media, politics, society or whatever.

Without Jesus Christ as your Savior, you are spiritually dead here and now and your physical death is only a formality. Ephesians 2.1 “…and you were dead in your trespasses and sins,…”. That means although their bodies were doing the things all living beings do, their spirit was dead. They were separated from God.

Talk about “dead man walking”!. How about “the walking dead”? Because that is what you are without God and Jesus Christ.

Eternal life is a relationship

John 17:3 “Now this is eternal life; that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”  Eternal life is the personal knowledge of the Father and the Son. It is not a possession but a relationship.

All who believe that Jesus Christ is God’s Son sent by God to die for their sins and who accept the free gift of salvation have eternal life in the here and now. Knowing God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent, is eternal life.

It is being spiritually alive, spiritually aware. Therefore, everyone who does not know God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent, is spiritually dead.  Such a person has no eternal life. They are the walking dead.

Crossed over from death to life

John 5:24 “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me, has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life”. (Emphasis mine)

Those that have crossed over from death to life in this world have eternal life. They bring life and light into the lives of others. Eternal life people are able to proclaim life, hope and love that has everlasting value reaching beyond the death and decay of the world.

Lives changed for the better

You can go back in history, distant and not so distant, and you will see that wherever the message of God’s gift of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ had been proclaimed, people’s lives changed for the better. They were lifted out of poverty, received healing and medical care, deliverance from ancestral bondage, liberty, education and hope. The light and the life of the gospel of Christ Jesus brings eternal life to dead people and His disciples are light and life bearers.

All who are children of God through faith in Jesus Christ are spiritually alive for all eternity here in the now among millions of spiritually dead people!  That is why Jesus said to the disciple who wanted to first bury his father, “Let the dead bury their own dead”. His father was obviously not a believer in Jesus Christ.

To be alive and to have eternal life you have to believe what God says about salvation.

An eternal being

When do you become an eternal being?

The Bible teaches that the moment you repent from your sins and ask God to forgive you and cleanse you with the blood of Jesus Christ, you cross over from death to live. The criminal on the cross next to Jesus on Calvary, said to Jesus, “…remember me when you come into your Kingdom”. Jesus replied, “Today you will be with me in Paradise. This is a solemn promise.” (Luke 23:42 – 43 Living Bible). That sinner by a simple act of asking mercy from Jesus on the cross, crossed over from death to an eternal being.

The physical body may be decaying and will decay but there is no sting in a believer’s death. In that moment when the body breathes its last breath here in this world it is only a passing over to the other side “to be with Christ”. There is no death or separation from God and His love, not now, not ever. You are an eternal being.

Each one has a body (physical), a soul (the mind and intellect) and a spirit (heart). It is the spirit that connects with God through believing what God has done through Jesus Christ becoming eternal spirit, just as God is the Eternal Spirit. Eternal life is life as an eternal being – knowing God and Jesus Christ whom he has sent.

This is eternal life

And this is eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent.” (John 17:3 NASB)

It is the resurrection of a person dead in his sins to everlasting life.

“I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.” (John 5:25)

It is my understanding from the Scripture references I quote that the death referred to is a spiritual death, being separated from God and Jesus Christ. The acceptance or rejection of God’s free gift of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ’s finished work of redemption on the cross, separates the living from the dead here and now in this world.

Make a choice

But God’s grace is always hounding us through His love. The dead have many messengers crossing their paths on earth bringing the message of the gift of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. I believe people do have opportunities to make a choice between “becoming alive to God in Christ Jesus” or remaining “dead in sin”. A choice to be alive now and eternally united with God through Christ or to keep on being a “dead man/woman walking” in this world.

Right now, if you are reading this post and you do not have eternal life, make a choice to respond and choose to accept Christ as your Savior. Confess that God raised Him from the dead. Immediately you will “cross over from death to life”, right here, right now and forever and ever. Become a spiritual alive person while living among the dead.

Strangers here

To my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ I remind you that we “are strangers here” walking, working, creating and living among a dead, decaying society and world. But we have the message of eternal life. The message that brings life and light in a dark world. We should not become complacent or partakers of the dead works of the world system but strive to shine our light and be salt to stop the rot and decay. We must keep on proclaiming the message of life and hope wherever we find ourselves.

Time is of the essence. Please read the signs.

Pray this simple prayer with all your heart and in sincerity and you will experience crossing over from death to life –

Dear Father God thank you for sending your Son Jesus Christ to bring life to the dead. I believe that you sent Him and I want to accept the free gift of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ right now. I acknowledge Lord Jesus that I am dead in my sins and need to be redeemed by Your blood shed on the Cross of Calvary. Please forgive me and cleanse me and give me a clean heart and eternal life. Thank you Father God, thank you Jesus. Amen

About stranger2

I am mature person living in South Africa, the country of my birth. My ancestry goes back to 1725 when my forefather arrived in the Cape from Germany. At the age of 11 years, I received my first "adult" bible from my godly grandmother and the verse she wrote in front has been my beacon all through my life: "Thy word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path." (Psm 119:105). I became a born again Christian at the age of 17. I have nothing to boast of except in "the cross of Jesus Christ" and His ransom paid for my sin. I have experienced His grace and mercy in abundance and know that I am a stranger in this world. I write as stranger 2 and believe that my posts are inspired by the Holy Spirit for the times we live in to alert fellow Christians about deception in the times we live in, even in churches. I love God's people and desire that "...we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ." To grow up as mature Christians we need solid food teaching and not milk (foundation teachings). I choose to be known just as "stranger 2" as we are all supposed to be strangers in this world and I join other strangers too.
